Robyn Sanford is an interdisciplinary artist based in Los Angeles whose work explores the shifting margins of social exchanges, particularly in the context of emerging technologies that emulate interpersonal relationships. Sanford’s observations of real and virtual interactions form the basis of her explorations of physical touch and non-verbal communication and how we manipulate digital realities to transmit the intimacy and un-spoken rituals normally present in face-to-face, tangible interactions. She employs materials and references to technology fused with traditional media, spanning painting, photography, fiber arts, wood, metal, and electronics to create installations and sculptural projects. Bright colors, tactile finishes, reflection and transparency are often utilized in her work representing the glossy facade of viral engagement juxtaposed with the physicality of reality. Her work encourages the viewer’s reflection on their own behavior and experience with computer-mediated communication. These associations create unique meaning where the viewer’s participation becomes an essential part of the shaping of the narratives within the work.
Sanford has been featured in galleries, alternative spaces, and events throughout the Southern California area and across the US – most recently including the Getty 25 event hosted by 11:11 Projects, The Armory Center for the Arts, The Paseo Project in Taos, Bold Pas in Pasadena and Irvine Fine Arts Center. Her work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Southern California.
